Canada goes to the polls

By Phil Bainbridge

April 28, 2025 - Canada goes to the polls, with voting spread across six time zones and ballots counted by hand. Booths will all close within three hours of each other to enable a winner to be announced by the following morning.

Results are expected within 30 minutes of the polls closing at 2300GMT in Newfoundland and in British Columbia at 0200GMT. Candidates are standing for 343 constituencies or ridings, and around 28 million people are registered to vote.

Turnout in recent elections has declined from its peak between 70-80% from 1950-1990s but is expected to increase again for the 45th General Election.
