As President Trump weighs up how to equalise tariff rates between the U.S. and major trading partners, the scale of deficit, and to a lesser extent surplus, that the U.S. encounters differs wildly from nation to nation.

In the 10 weeks since Trump took office for a second term, he’s imposed new 20% duties on all imports from China, restored 25% duties on steel and aluminium, and is due to hit Mexico and Canada with 25% tariffs that were delayed for a month.
