Powerful earthquake rocks Myanmar and Thailand
March 28, 2025 - A 7.7-magnitude earthquake strikes central Myanmar, killing several people, toppling buildings and bridges, and causing damage in cities as far away as Bangkok in neighbouring Thailand.
The first tremor hit 16km northwest of the city of Sagaing, near Myanmar’s second-largest city Mandalay, at a depth of 10km at about 12:50pm (06:20GMT), the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said. A 6.4 magnitude aftershock was recorded 12 minutes later.
Myanmar’s ruling military declared a state of emergency in six regions and states. A major hospital in Naypyidaw was declared a “mass casualty area”, an official at the facility told AFP news agency.
At least 81 construction workers are missing after an unfinished high-rise building collapsed in Bangkok, according to Thailand’s deputy prime minister.
Myanmar sits on the boundary of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, making it highly susceptible to seismic activity. The country is also affected by the Sagaing Fault, a major strike-slip fault that runs north to south through Myanmar, including near major cities like Mandalay and Yangon.
