PM Carney calls snap election in Canada for April 28

By Jordi Bou

March 24, 2025 - New Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has called a snap election for April 28, saying he needs a strong mandate to deal with the threat posed by President Donald Trump.

Carney, a former two-time central banker, is expected to pitch himself as the best candidate to take on Trump, as the country’s businesses are shaken by a trade war with the U.S.

He also hopes to capitalise on a remarkable recovery by his Liberal Party in polls since January, when the U.S. President Donald Trump began threatening Canada with punitive tariffs and former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation.
