Glaciers disappearing faster than ever

By Phil Bainbridge

March 21, 2025 - The largest recorded decrease in glacial mass has occurred in the past six years, with an estimated 450 gigatons of ice lost in 2024 alone.

Glaciers around the globe are disappearing faster than ever, with the last three-year period seeing the largest glacial mass loss on record, according to a new UNESCO report. The 9,000 gigatons lost since 1975
is equivalent to a Germany-sized block of ice 25m thick.
