Zaporizhya nuclear plant could be part of ceasefire talks
March 18, 2025 - U.S. President Donald Trump has indicated that the fate of Ukraine’s Zaporizhya nuclear power station is part of his ceasefire discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Trump and Putin are scheduled to have a phone call to discuss a proposed 30-day ceasefire in the war in Ukraine. On Sunday, Mr. Trump said the conversation will include occupied territory as well as “power plants.”
Analysts in Kyiv said Trump was likely referring to Ukraine retaking control of the Zaporizhya plant.
The facility is the largest nuclear power station in Europe and has six reactors capable of generating enough energy for four million homes.
Its proximity to frontline fighting has long raised concerns about the risk of a radiological disaster.
