Chernobyl reactor shield hit by Russian drone, Ukraine says
February 14, 2025 - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reports that a Russian drone strike has hit the radiation shelter protecting Chernobyl’s damaged nuclear reactor, while Russia denies any claims it attacked the site.
Zelenskyy said the damage to the shelter was “significant”, according to initial assessments, but a fire caused by the attack had been extinguished. He added that radiation levels remained stable and were being “constantly monitored”.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said its team at the Chernobyl site “heard an explosion” at about 1.50am local time coming from the safe confinement protecting the remains of Reactor 4.
The agency remains on “high alert” after the incident.
Chornobyl was the site of the world's worst civil nuclear catastrophe when one of its four reactors exploded in 1986. That reactor is now enveloped by a protective shelter to contain the lingering radiation.
