Trump threatens to cut aid to Jordan, Egypt if they refute Gaza relocation

By Jordi Bou

February 11, 2025 - U.S. President Donald Trump says he would consider withholding aid to Jordan and Egypt if they don’t co-operate with his plan to take control of Gaza and resettle the population in the two countries.

Egypt and Jordan, countries with peace treaties with Israel, oppose absorbing Palestinians, claiming it poses a security risk, is destabilising and threatens to provoke mass opposition.

Arab countries also suspect Israel might use this opportunity to force permanent demographic changes to wreck Palestinian demands for statehood in Gaza, the West Bank and east Jerusalem, which was also captured by Israel in 1967.

Israeli ultranationalists have long suggested that Jordan be considered a Palestinian state so that Israel can keep the West Bank, which they view as the biblical heartland of the Jewish people. Jordan’s monarchy has vehemently rejected that scenario.

Amman has come to depend on Washington as its largest source of economic and military assistance for decades, which now stands at more than $1 billion a year.

Jordan is home to U.S. military bases, and millions of refugees, and its security co-operation is crucial for Israel, worried about smuggling routes into the occupied West Bank, BBC reports.
