Trump to impose 25% tariff on steel, aluminium imports

By Jordi Bou

February 10, 2025 - President Trump is to impose 25% tariffs on all steel and aluminium imports, extending his trade disputes into the metals sector in a fresh wave of protectionist measures from Washington.

America’s neighbouring countries, Canada and Mexico, are two of the US’s biggest steel trading partners, and Canada is the biggest supplier of aluminium.

If the tariffs do come into effect, they will greatly impact steelmakers in countries that trade with the U.S.

Canada, Brazil and Mexico were the U.S.'s top three steel trading partners last year, followed by South Korea, Vietnam and Japan.

During his first four-year term from 2017, Trump imposed tariffs of 25% on steel and 10% on aluminium.

But he later granted several countries exemptions, including Australia, Brazil, Canada and Mexico, and his successor Joe Biden later negotiated duty-free quota deals with Britain, Japan and the EU.
