Scientists worried by record January warmth

By Ninian Carter

February 6, 2025 - Despite the beginnings of a cooler La Niña Pacific weather pattern, January 2025 was the world’s warmest January ever, confounding scientists who expected it to be cooler than last year.

January 2025 was the world’s warmest January on record, confounding scientists that expected it to be cooler than last year.

Due to a natural switch away from the hotter El Niño Pacific weather pattern to the milder La Niña phase, January this year should have been milder.

Instead, it was warmer than January 2024 by 0.09°C and 1.75°C warmer than January temperatures in the late 19th Century, raising further questions about the pace of climate change.
