Palestinians return to devastated northern Gaza

January 27, 2025 - Tens of thousands of displaced Gaza residents are returning to what is left of their homes after Israel opened a corridor into the north of the battered enclave.

Television images showed large crowds on the move and witnesses said the first residents arrived in Gaza City in the early morning after the first crossing point in central Gaza opened at 05:00 GMT. Another crossing opened around three hours later, letting in vehicles.

Palestinians began their journey as Israel removed roadblocks after the militant group Hamas agreed to release six hostages this week.

The hostages include Arbel Yehud – the civilian at the centre of a row.

Hamas released four soldiers on Saturday, but not Yehud. Israel accused Hamas of breaching the ceasefire deal under which Israeli civilians were to be freed first in exchange for the release of Palestinian prisoners.

Since the ceasefire deal came into force on January 19, seven hostages and just under 300 prisoners have been released, the BBC said.
