Possible contenders to succeed Justin Trudeau

By Ninian Carter

January 8, 2025 - Whoever becomes leader of Canada’s Liberal Party will become prime minister, then face a general election and likely lose.

After pressure from many in his own party to quit, Justin Trudeau has caved and will step down as leader of the Liberal Party and prime minister of Canada.

His resignation sets in motion a fight to replace him, with some of the country’s most prominent political faces vying for the job.

The winner will become the prime minister and take the party into a general election to face Pierre Poilievre of the Conservatives – currently well over 20 points ahead of the Liberals in opinion polls.

No one has of yet announced their candidacy to succeed Trudeau, but likely contenders include Chrystia Freeland, Mark Carney, Christy Clark, Mélanie Joly, Anita Anand, Dominic LeBlanc and François-Philippe Champagne.
