Powerful earthquake kills scores in Tibet
January 7, 2025 - At least 95 people have been killed after a major earthquake struck the northern foothills of the Himalayas near one of Tibet’s holiest cities. Tremors were also felt in Nepal, Bhutan and parts of India.
The quake hit at around 9:00 local time, with its epicentre located in Tingri, a rural county known as the northern gateway to the Everest region.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake was centred in the Tibet region at a depth of about 10km (6 miles). It measured it the tremor at a magnitude 7.1, while China recorded it as 6.8.
