New era in Syria as Assad is toppled by rebels

By Jordi Bou

December 9, 2024 - Syrian rebels who have ousted Bashar al-Assad and seized the capital Damascus include fighters from different factions, while other groups also hold territory elsewhere in the country.

Syria is starting a hopeful but uncertain era after rebels seized the capital and President Bashar al-Assad fled to Russia, following 13 years of civil war and more than 50 years of his family’s brutal rule.

The rebel commander Ahmed al-Sharaa, leader of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the main rebel group behind Assad’s ouster, has met with Assad’s Prime Minister Mohammed Jalali and Vice President Faisal Mekdad to discuss arrangements for a transitional government, according to Reuters.

But Ahmed al-Sharaa, better known as Abu Mohammed al-Golani, is not the only player in Syria’s fast-changing future.

Other groups, including an umbrella alliance of Turkish-backed militias known as the Syrian National Army (SNA) and the mainly Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) groups have also gained ground and will be determined to hold on to their gains.
