Syrian rebels enter Aleppo in major offensive
November 29, 2024 - Rebel forces have reportedly entered parts of Syria’s second-largest city, Aleppo, in the biggest offensive against the government in years.
The Islamist militant group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and allied factions said they seized a number of towns and villages in Aleppo and Idlib provinces after launching the offensive on Nov 27, BBC reports.
The monitoring group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), reported that Syrian and Russian planes carried out 23 air strikes on Aleppo city and the surrounding areas on Nov 27.
The SOHR said 255 people, mostly combatants, had been killed in the fighting,
The attack is the biggest since March 2020, when Russia and Turkey, which supports some of the rebels in the northwest, agreed to a deal that de-escalated the conflict.
