British MPs vote in favour of allowing assisted dying
November 29, 2024 - British MPs vote in favour of legalising assisted dying, taking the country a step closer to joining to a growing list of territories that sanction euthanasia in extreme cases.
Assisted dying could become legal in England and Wales after a bill was backed on Nov 29, by MPs in an historic Westminster vote.
Kim Leadbeater’s “Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill” received 330 yeas against 275 nays at its second reading in the House of Commons – a majority of 55.
The bill would allow terminally ill adults with six months left to live to request medical assistance to end their lives peacefully.
A similar bill was voted on in 2015, being beaten by 178 votes to 106.
