Jan 14 confirmation hearing set for Trump defence secretary
December 20, 2024 - President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Defense is expected to face his first public questioning from U.S. senators on Jan 14.
Trump tapped the Fox News co-host, a former Army National Guard major and combat veteran who deployed to both Iraq and Afghanistan, as his Secretary of Defense, typically among the first Cabinet posts to be considered by the U.S. Senate for confirmation.
But Hegseth is running into questions amid a sexual assault allegation, which he has denied, and other emerging reports about his work conduct and history.
Trump's fellow Republicans will take control of the Senate on January 3 with a 53-47 seat majority. If Democrats remain united against Hegseth, he cannot afford to lose support from more than three Republicans, Reuters reports.
