What a second Trump term may look like

By Duncan Mil

November 7, 2024 - Policymakers are preparing for Donald Trump’s return to the White House. His allies and detractors have made clear that his second term will be different from the first.

CNN has learned that Trump has issued executive orders, policy papers, and regulation reversals promising to fix what he calls a broken country as soon as he is inaugurated in January.

He has promised to apply the lessons of his first term in the White House to his second term.

“I didn’t know anybody (during my first term), I know everybody (now). And we’re going to make this country great again,” Trump said last week in an interview on Fox News.

For instance, Trump has promised to slap tariffs on all European goods entering the U.S. Also, Trump has boasted that he could instantly “end” Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Trump has reduced his energy policy to three words: “drill, baby, drill.”

Trump also wants to axe President Joe Biden’s freeze on permits for new liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects.

Some in Trump’s camp want him to scrap the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), which allocates $468 billion for projects such as clean tech, hydrogen, and renewable energy.

His plan to quit the Paris Climate Agreement once again means the world’s second-biggest emitting country -- responsible for more than a tenth of planet-warming pollution -- will no longer have to submit a national climate action plan to the United Nations every five years.
