U.S. Army’s Humvee successor unveiled
November 4, 2024 - GM Defense has independently developed its Next Generation Tactical Vehicle as an option to replace the Humvee -- High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) -- fielded in the 1980’s.
The “Next Gen” combines GM’s 2.8L Duramax turbo-diesel engine with a 12-module battery pack, in addition to drive motors for the front and rear axles that enable Silent Drive, which makes the vehicles harder to detect.
The prototype has up to 480km (300 miles) of silent range with the engine recharging the batteries twice.
GM offers the prototype in two-, four-, and six-seat configurations based on the Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck.
“Next Gen’s ‘wow’ factor is right behind the wheel,” GM Defense Government Solutions and Strategy Division VP John Johnson explained. “Customers need to drive this highly capable vehicle to see, feel, and hear the benefits.”
