November 17, 1849: London’s oldest hat shop sold the first ever bowler hat, ordered by a customer who required protection from low-hanging branches when out shooting

November 18, 1307: William Tell shot an apple off his son’s head with a crossbow, an act of rebellion against Austria that led to the establishment of the Swiss Confederation

November 19, 2023: Rosalynn Carter, former U.S. First Lady as the wife of President Jimmy Carter, died at age 96. She became a leading advocate for women’s rights and mental health

November 20, 1947: Britain’s future Queen Elizabeth II married Lt. Philip Mountbatten, a former prince of Greece and Denmark who renounced his titles to marry the princess

November 21, 1964: The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, marking the gateway to New York harbour, was opened. It hosts the start of the annual New York Marathon each year

November 22, 1963: U.S. President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas. He and his wife Jackie are pictured arriving at the city’s Love Field airport that morning

November 23, 1889: The world’s first “jukebox” was installed for which listeners used earphones to hear songs on a coin-operated, wax cylinder phonograph
