Israel launches ground invasion of Lebanon
October 1, 2024 - Israeli troops have crossed into southern Lebanon, in what the IDF calls a “limited, localised and targeted” operation against Hezbollah, the first Israeli ground invasion in the country since 2006.
The raids by Israeli troops in southern Lebanon that began overnight were limited and went only a short distance over the border, an Israeli security official said on Tuesday, adding that no direct clashes with Hezbollah fighters were reported.
The Lebanese prime minister says his country is facing "one of its most dangerous phases", and says one million people are displaced.
In the meantime, Israel’s military spokesperson ordered the residents of about 30 border villages in south Lebanon to evacuate, telling them to head north of the Awali River, around 55km from the border, as Israel conducted what it said were “limited” raids into Lebanon.
