Amazon staff to return to office

By Duncan Mil

September 17, 2024 - The online retailer is ordering staff back to the office five days a week beginning in January as it ends its hybrid work policy — staff were previously allowed to work from home during the Covid crisis.

The shakeup, announced in a memo to employees by Chief Executive Officer Andy Jassy on Monday (September 16, 2024), echoed what some company veterans have been saying: It’s become more challenging to get things done at Amazon.

In a letter to staff, Jassy highlighted the “significant” advantages of working together in the office, stating that it is easier for employees to learn, collaborate, and invent when they are physically present and that teams tend to be better connected.

“When we look back over the last five years, we continue to believe that the advantages of being together in the office are significant,” Jassy wrote.

“Before the pandemic, it was not a given that folks could work remotely two days a week, and that will also be true moving forward,” Jassy added.

The retail giant previously required staff to be in the office at least three days a week for the past fifteen months.
