Harris, Trump on the hot-button issues

By Duncan Mil

September 17, 2024 - Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump have sharply different records and plans on a wide array of key issues affecting Americans’ daily lives and the shape of the country’s political system.

Last Tuesday (September 10), Trump and Harris engaged in a fiery debate, bashing each other’s policies and proposals in their only presidential debate of the 2024 race.

After arguing about each candidate’s character and fitness for over twenty minutes, they settled to discuss the economy.

Neither candidate addressed the economic crisis looming over American workers between the catchy sound bites.

Social Security and Medicare -- the lifelines of millions of Americans -- is running dry.

According to the Social Security Administration trustees, the fund faces a $22.6 trillion shortfall, which is the equivalent of $172,000 for every household in the country.

The Social Security Trust Fund will likely run out of money by 2035. At that point, benefits will fall by almost 25%, and an average dual-income couple could lose about $16,500 a year in benefits.

“The reality is, if we don’t act soon, Social Security will be a thing of the past,” warned one financial expert.

Harris and Trump insist they want to protect Social Security, but the specifics are unclear. Harris advocates for higher taxes on the wealthy, saying, “We need to ensure millionaires and billionaires pay their fair share.”

Trump vows to cut taxes if reelected.
