Putin visits key link in planned gas pipeline

By Jordi Bou

September 3, 2024 - Russian President Vladimir Putin is visiting Mongolia for talks about a planned new gas pipeline connecting Russia and China via Mongolia.

Putin is due to hold talks with Mongolian President Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh about different issues, including building the Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline.

The project is part of a strategy to compensate for the drop in gas sales in Europe, following a widespread boycott of Russian resources due to the invasion of Ukraine.

Power of Siberia 2 would carry 50 billion cubic metres (bcm) of natural gas a year from its Yamal region to China via Mongolia, Reuters reports.

It is the planned successor to an existing pipeline of the same name which already supplies Russian gas to China and is due to reach its planned capacity of 38 bcm per year in 2025.

Putin’s visit to Mongolia is the first to an International Criminal Court (ICC) member since it issued a warrant for his arrest last year.
