WHO declares Mpox global health emergency
August 15, 2024 - The World Health Organization has declared the Mpox outbreak in Africa a public health emergency of international concern, with scientists worried about the rapid spread of a new variant.
The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) had warned last week of an alarming rate of spread of the viral infection, which is transmitted through close contact and causes flu-like symptoms and pus-filled lesions.
Africa CDC says there were more than 14,500 mpox infections and over 450 deaths from mpox between the start of 2024 and the end of July. That is a 160% increase in infections and a 19% increase in deaths compared with the same period in 2023.
