Bangladesh PM resigns after deadly protests
August 5, 2024 - Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned and fled the country after some of the worst violence seen since the birth of the South Asian nation more than five decades ago.
In a briefing to reporters, Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman has announced that he is assuming control at what he called “a critical time for our country” and will establish an interim government.
Bangladesh has been engulfed by protests and violence after student protests last month against reservation quotas in government jobs escalated into a campaign for the ouster of Hasina, who won a fourth straight term in January in an election boycotted by the opposition.
At least 91 people were killed on Aug 4 in clashes between police and protesters, taking the death toll in recent weeks to more than 300.
