By Ninian Carter

July 29, 2024 - The opening weekend for Deadpool & Wolverine raked in $205 million at U.S. cinemas, around 25% more than projected – making it the eighth-biggest movie opening of all time.

All talk of the superhero movie genre being on its last legs has been halted in its tracks after the surprise success of Deadpool & Wolverine.

The third instalment in the Deadpool trilogy, which opened on July 26, bagged $205 million at the U.S. box office, almost 25% more than the industry forecast of $160-$170 million.

The movie also dethroned the original Deadpool (2016) for biggest R-rated launch in the U.S., and with an additional $233 million haul from international markets, took a total $438 million over the weekend – the biggest global opening since Avatar: The Way of Water.

At the San Diego Comic Con over the same weekend, producer Kevin Feige revealed the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe has now made in excess of $30 billion – the first movie franchise to do so.
