August 4, 1944: Anne Frank and her family were discovered by the Nazis after two years hiding in an attic room in Amsterdam. Anne’s famous diary was published after the war

August 5, 1884: The cornerstone for the Statue of Liberty was laid on Bedloe’s Island in New York City harbour. Around 3.5 million people visit the landmark each year

August 6, 1945: The city of Hiroshima was obliterated by an atomic bomb. The only structure left standing near the bomb’s hypocentre is preserved as a Peace Memorial

August 7, 1947: Thor Heyerdahl’s raft Kon-Tiki reached Polynesia 101 days after leaving Peru, indicating pre-Incan people could have colonised the area by drifting on ocean currents

August 8, 2023: Wildfires driven by high winds destroyed the historic town of Lahaina on the Hawaiian island of Maui. More than 100 people lost their lives

August 9, 1999: Former KGB officer Vladimir Putin was named acting prime minister of Russia after President Boris Yeltsin sacked his fourth premier in 17 months

August 10, 1519: Ferdinand Magellan sailed from Seville to find a western passage to the Indies. His crew would eventually complete the first circumnavigation of the globe
