France faces deadlock after left alliance wins most seats
July 8, 2024 - France is facing a hung parliament after a surprise left-wing surge has thwarted Marine Le Pen’s quest to bring the far right to power.
The surprise result for the leftist New Popular Front (NFP) – which won 182 seats, followed by president Emmanuel Macron’s centrist Together alliance on 163 and the far right in third with 143 seats – showed the strength of tactical voting against Marine Le Pen’s National Rally (RN).
The far right and its allies had forged a commanding lead in the first round but were ultimately held back by massive tactical voting to prevent them winning enough seats to form a government.
With no single group securing a working majority the possibilities include the NFP forming a minority government or the building of a broad, unwieldy coalition.
