Cavendish powers to Tour de France record
June 29, 2024 - July 21, 2024 - Prolific rider Mark Cavendish has broken the Tour de France stage wins record, surpassing cycling legend Eddy Merckx, with a lung-bursting sprint finish to claim his 35th victory in Saint Vulbas.
Mark Cavendish delayed his retirement last year -- after suffering a broken collarbone in a horrific crash in the 2023 race -- to pursue the outright record for Tour de France stage wins.
For the first time in 50 years, the Tour de France will not see a Champs-Élysées finish, as the Olympic Games are to be held in Paris, and will instead end with a hilly time trial in Nice.
