June 29, 2024 - July 21, 2024 - The Tour de France began in 1903 as a way to boost sales of a sports newspaper but soon became popular in its own right. The 111th edition of cycling’s most prestigious race begins in the historic city of Florence, as Italy stages the Grand Départ for the first time. Nice hosts the final-stage time trial, reminiscent of the famous Greg LeMond-Laurent Fignon duel in 1989.

Cycling’s most prestigious race began in 1903 when Henri Desgrange, editor of L’Auto sports newspaper and a keen cyclist, came up with the idea of a major cycling race to boost sales.

L’Auto was printed on yellow paper and in 1919 Desgrange initiated the yellow jersey to identify the race leader. It has become one of the most coveted prizes in sport.

The race soon became immensely popular in its own right and has been held annually ever since, with the exception of the two world wars.
