Modi claims victory in closer-than-expected Indian election

By Jordi Bou

June 5, 2024 - Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to retain power at the head of a ruling coalition but his Hindu nationalist party lost its outright majority for the first time in a decade.

The final count shows that Modi’s National Democratic Alliance won 286 seats, more than the 272 seats needed to secure a majority but far fewer than predicted.

His ruling Bharatiya Janata Party won less seats than expected – and more than 60 seats less than the record 303 it won in the 2019 election.

More than 640 million votes were cast in the marathon election held over a span of six weeks in the world’s largest democratic exercise.
