By Jordi Bou

June 3, 2024 - Claudia Sheinbaum has won a landslide victory to become Mexico’s first female president, preliminary results by the country’s electoral authority show.

Sheinbaum won the presidency with between 58.3% and 60.7% of the vote, according to a rapid sample count by Mexico's electoral authority. That is set to be the highest vote tally percentage in Mexico's democratic history.

Opposition candidate Xóchitl Gálvez took between 26.6% and 28.6% of the vote, while Citizen Movement candidate Jorge Álvarez Máynez came in third place with between 9.9% and 10.8% of the vote.

Sheinbaum will replace her mentor, outgoing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, on October 1.
