South Africa's ANC on course to lose majority

June 3, 2024 - The ruling African National Congress has lost its parliamentary majority held since the end of white minority rule in 1994 and will need coalition partners to form a government.

The ANC, which led the fight to free South Africa from apartheid, has received only 40.18 percent votes in the election on May 29, well short of a majority.

The Democratic Alliance (DA), the main opposition party, received the second-highest number of votes (21.81 percent) followed by the MK party (14.58 percent) and EFF (9.52 percent).

The constitution stipulates that parliament must sit within 14.
