Israel claims control of Gaza’s entire land border

By Jordi Bou

May 30, 2024 - Israel’s military claims it has seized control of the entire length of Gaza’s border with Egypt, deepening its ground invasion of Rafah despite international condemnation.

Israel’s control of the strategically important buffer zone known as the Philadelphi Corridor means it now controls Gaza’s entire land border.

The Philadelphi Corridor, only about 100m wide in parts, runs along the Gaza side of the 13km border with Egypt. Gaza's only other land border is with Israel itself.

Meanwhile, fierce street fighting and Israeli bombardment continue in Rafah a day after tanks rolled into the centre of the southern Gaza city sheltering hundreds of thousands of civilians.
