Dutch far-right to form coalition government

By Jordi Bou

May 16, 2024 - Anti-Islam populist leader Geert Wilders and three other party leaders have reached a deal to form what is set to be the most right-wing government in the Netherlands in decades.

The deal brings together Wilders’ PVV with outgoing Prime Minister Mark Rutte’s centre-right VVD, the new NSC party and farmers’ protest party BBB in a coalition with a strong majority of 88 seats in the 150-seat Lower House.

A final decision has not been made on the next Dutch prime minister, but it will not be Wilders, who gave up the chance in a bid to secure a deal.
