July 26, 2024 - August 11, 2024 - The 2024 summer Olympic Games, the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad, take place in Paris, France. The modern Olympic Games were founded in 1896, with the tradition of gold, silver and bronze medals introduced at the 1904 Games.

The U.S. heads the list of all-time medal winning nations with an incredible 2,629 medals ahead of Paris 2024, 1,061 of them gold, and will be hoping to top the leaderboards to maintain its dominance in Paris. With the Soviet Union in second place, Team GB is the next on the list of still active countries with 284 gold medals, followed closely by China with 263.

The Paris Olympic medals contain ironwork from the Eiffel Tower, the first time any host city has incorporated pieces of a national monument.Designed by jeweller Chaumet, the 18-gram hexagon tokens, representing the shape of France, are made of iron from past refurbishments of the Tower stored for years in a warehouse whose location is secret. The back of the medals features the Greek goddess of victory, Nike, charging forward, with the Acropolis to one side and the Eiffel Tower to the other.

The 5,084 medals, including for the Paralympic Games, are produced by France’s mint, the Monnaie de Paris.
