June 2, 2014: Telangana, India’s 29th state, came into being after the state of Andhra Pradesh formally split in two, ending a nearly 50-year-long struggle for separate status

June 3, 1844: A large, flightless seabird, the Great Auk, became extinct when the last pair of breeding adults were killed by hunters on an island off the coast of Iceland

June 4, 1944: Rome was liberated by allied troops led by U.S. General Mark Clark. Historic sites such as the Colosseum were found to have been left intact

June 5, 2005: Rising tennis star Rafael Nadal won his first Grand Slam title at Roland Garros. He went on to win 22 major titles, including a record 14 on the red clay in Paris
