Alarming global rise in sea surface temperature

By Ninian Carter

May 8, 2024 - The world’s oceans have broken temperature records every day for the past year, according to analysis of the latest data from the EU’s Copernicus Climate Change Service.

Planet-warming climate change gases are the main culprit, although the El Niño natural weather event has also contributed to warmer seas.

Copernicus also confirms that April’s air temperature was the warmest on record, extending a consistent run of 11 straight months of heat records.

For decades, our oceans have been absorbing around 25% of human-made carbon dioxide and soaking up around 90% of the planet’s excess heat.

However, over the past year, the oceans have displayed concerning evidence that they are now struggling to cope.
