Chaos engulfs U.S. campuses

By Duncan Mil

May 1, 2024 - Here are the latest developments from the pro-Palestine protests across U.S. college campuses. The protests have led to the arrest of more than 1,850 protesters.

The weeks of demonstrations -- the most sweeping and prolonged unrest to rock U.S. college campuses since the Vietnam War protests of the 1960s and 1970s -- have already led to several hundred arrests (1,856 arrests as of May 2) of students and other activists.

Students at more than 30 campuses have rallied in recent days to oppose Israel’s war in Gaza, demanding universities divest from companies with financial ties to Israel amid its war with Hamas.

Protests and Biden’s strong support for Israel have also highlighted divisions within his Democratic party.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was repeatedly pressed on Wednesday about why Americans haven’t heard from Biden about the protests.

“The president is being kept regularly updated on what’s happening,” she said. “He is monitoring the situation closely.”

On Wednesday, 57 Democrats in Congress asked Biden to withhold aid to Israel in an attempt to stop a planned assault in Rafah.

The tensions came to a head at Columbia University and City College of New York, when police arrested some 300 demonstrators.

Police have arrested protesters on 33 campuses in at least 25 states.
