Iran launches massive attack on Israel

By Jordi Bou

April 14, 2024 - Iran’s first direct attack on Israel, in response to a recent strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, is pushing the Middle East closer to a full-blown regional war.

Israeli officials said Iran had fired more than 300 projectiles, including 185 drones, 36 cruise missiles and 110 surface-to-surface missiles at Israel, the first time that it had targeted the Jewish state directly.

Iran-backed militants in Lebanon, Iraq and Yemen also fired rockets, drones and missiles at Israel.

Israel, with the help of key allies, the U.S., UK and Jordan, claims to have intercepted 99% of the launches.

A Bedouin girl was critically injured by shrapnel in the south of the country and an air force base suffered minor damage, but there were no other reports of serious impacts, Israel says.

The threat of open warfare erupting between the arch Middle East foes, and dragging in the U.S., has put the region on edge as Washington said America did not seek conflict with Iran but would not hesitate to protect its forces and Israel.
