Israel-Hamas war situation report day 147

By Phil Bainbridge

March 1, 2024 - Over 100 Palestinians were killed as they crowded a food aid convoy – Gaza officials say IDF troops fired on civilians, while Israel says most were killed in the crush or run over by trucks as troops tried to disperse the crowd.

While many in the international community have been quick to condemn the deaths, the spokesman for the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stopped short of blaming Israel, calling it “an appalling incident that needs further investigation”. Hamas has warned that it could end hostage release negotiations which had been appearing to make progress.

Representatives of Hamas, Fatah and other factions are meeting in Moscow to discuss the formation of a unified Palestinian government, with all sides feeling a greater responsibility. Russia is seeking to remain relevant to the peace process and has put itself forward as a possible mediator between the Palestinians and Israel.
