Xbox to test four exclusive games on rival consoles

By Ninian Carter

February 16, 2024 - Xbox has announced that four exclusive video games, including the highly-rated “Sea of Thieves”, are to be released on rival consoles – the Sony PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch.

Phil Spencer, the CEO of Microsoft’s Xbox gaming division, has announced that four exclusive Xbox video games are to be released on rival consoles from Sony and Nintendo.

According to The Verge technology news site, “Hi-Fi Rush”, “Pentiment”, “Sea of Thieves” and “Grounded” will be released on PlayStation 5 and Switch in coming months, in what may be a test to see what the company can learn from the experience.

Traditionally, the big three console makers – Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony – strive to attract users to their respective platforms by offering blockbuster games that can only be played on their machines.

It seems Microsoft is challenging this norm, with Spencer saying on the Official Xbox Podcast, “We’ve made the decision that we’re going to take four games to the other consoles.” Adding, “I do have a fundamental belief that over the next five or ten years, exclusive games, games that are exclusive to one piece of hardware, are going to be a smaller and smaller part of the game industry.”

If this spawns a decline in console-exclusive games, then it will be a boon for casual gamers who will no longer have to own multiple consoles in order to access every game available.
