EU military aid to Ukraine

By Duncan Mil

January 29, 2024 - European leaders have agreed on a €50 billion aid package for Ukraine after Hungary’s prime minister caved in to pressure from his fellow leaders and rescinded his veto.

The compromise at an emergency summit followed a campaign of pressure on Viktor Orbán, the bloc’s only leader critical of the EU’s financial and military support for Ukraine.

Orban has maintained close ties with Russia’s Vladimir Putin since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine almost two years ago.

“It is a clear signal to Moscow that Europe will stand firm and cannot be broken by any destructive waves devised by the Kremlin,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said in his nightly video address on Thursday.

The aid is critical to Ukraine as the Biden administration has failed to win Congressional backing for its own $60bn support package.

Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, said that she hoped the EU’s move would inspire the U.S. to follow suit. “It will be an encouragement to the United States to do their fair share.”
