CONFLICT

Israel-Hamas war situation report day 112

By Phil Bainbridge

January 26, 2024 - The International Court of Justice has handed down its interim ruling in the South African case alleging genocide of the Palestinian people by Israel.

The ICJ has said Israel must prevent any acts of, or incitement to, genocide or that could fall under the genocide convention, improve
humanitarian situation and ensure preservation of evidence. However, it did not call for an end to Israeli military action in Gaza.

Hamas and other Palestinian militias have re-infiltrated areas previously cleared by the IDF and have launched mortar and rocket attacks against Israeli forces in parts of Gaza City and Beit Hanoun ostensibly occupied by Israel. In Central Gaza, Islamic Jihad and PFLP fighters have for the third time attacked an IDF supply line.

The IDF has ordered the evacuation of Khan Younis city centre, the refugee camp and adjoining neighbourhoods as it attempts to clear Hamas from the area.

China has warned Iran to rein in Houthi attacks on shipping in the Red Sea or risk endangering its business relations with Beijing. Commercial shipping is down 40% through the Suez Canal since the Houthis began their campaign of targeting what the believe to be Israeli-linked ships, and insurance costs for all vessels have subsequently sky-rocketed.
