U.S. and UK launch new joint strikes on Yemen’s Houthis

By Jordi Bou

January 12, 2024 - The U.S. and Britain mounted a second operation against Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen in response to ongoing attacks on shipping in the Red Sea.

In the latest response, U.S. and British forces carried out strikes at eight different locations in Yemen, with support from Australia, Bahrain, Canada and the Netherlands, according to a joint statement signed by the six countries.

The strikes by carrier-based F/A-18 fighter jets, Tomahawk cruise missiles and British Typhoons, hit radars, drone and missile sites and underground weapons bunkers.

The Houthis say the latest attacks hit open spaces and former military camps - and they “will not go unanswered”.

So far, eight rounds of strikes over past month have failed to stop Houthi attacks against shipping.
