Israel-Hamas war situation report day 108

By Phil Bainbridge

January 22, 2024 - The Palestinian Red Crescent Society says Israeli forces are “besieging” their ambulance centre in Khan Younis, and they are unable to reach the wounded in the southern Gaza city.

IDF tanks were reportedly closing on al-Amal city hospital and the PRCS reported that it had lost contact with its team in the area. The IDF has said it raided a tunnel in a civilian part of the city previously used to hold up to 20 hostages at a time.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s rejection of a two-state solution as incompatible with the country’s security needs has drawn widespread condemnation. Saudi Arabia, which had been on track to normalise relations with Israel before the October 7 attacks, has said the country will not recognise Israel unless there is a path to Palestinian statehood. EU Foreign Ministers, also pushing for a two-state solution, will separately meet their Israeli and Palestinian counterparts to discuss humanitarian pauses and the release of hostages.

A missile strike on the Mazzeh neighbourhood of Damascus blamed on Israel killed 13 people including five Iranian Revolutionary Guards, one of them the Damascus spy chief for the Guards. Iran has said it “reserves the right to respond”.
