North Korea says tests underwater nuclear drone
January 19, 2024 - North Korea says it has conducted a test of an “underwater nuclear weapons system,” a claim that would dramatically escalate concerns that Kim Jong-Un is preparing for war.
The test is in response of this week‘s joint military drills by South Korea, the United States and Japan, state media KCNA said on Friday.
It is the fourth time state media has reported on the country’s “Haeil” unmanned underwater
vehicle (UUV) development, a kind of torpedo North Korea says can be fitted with tactical nuclear warheads.
Dubbed “Haeil”, meaning tsunami, is intended to sneak into enemy waters and create a large radioactive wave through an underwater explosion.
The test comes in North Korea as tensions rise on the Korean Peninsula, with Pyongyang becoming increasingly fiery in its rhetoric on preparing the country for war.
