Investigations begin into Tokyo plane crash
January 3, 2024 - Police and transport officials are investigating the cause of a fatal collision between a passenger jet and a smaller Coast Guard aircraft at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport.
Police and transport officials have begun separate investigations into the cause of a fatal collision between a passenger jet and a Coast Guard aircraft at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport.
On the evening of January 2, 2024, a Japan Airlines A350 collided with a De Havilland Dash-8 as it came in to land. Five people were killed on the smaller Coast Guard aircraft, while all 379 passengers and crew on flight JAL-516 escaped.
The pilots of both aircraft claim they were given permission to be on the runway from aviation officials.
Transport safety officers are focusing on communication between air traffic control and the two aircraft to determine what led to the collision, while police are looking into possible professional negligence.
