Earthquake strikes northern China

By Jordi Bou

December 19, 2023 - Rescuers are braving sub zero temperatures to search for survivors after the 6.2 tremor hit Gansu and Qinghai provinces, killing at least 125 people.

The 6.2 magnitude quake hit mountainous Gansu province around midnight on Dec 18 (16:00GMT), also shaking neighbouring Qinghai.

Fatalities may rise with over 700 reported injured in icy conditions.

Earthquakes are common in western provinces such as Gansu, lying on the eastern boundary of the tectonically active Qinghai-Tibetan plateau.

China’s deadliest quake in recent decades was in 2008 when a magnitude-8.0 temblor struck Sichuan, killing nearly 70,000 people.
